Howling Heroes 2023 Begins!

Howling Heroes launches new search for LAFD Mascot

Howling Heroes Launches New Search for LAFD Mascot

What is it like to be the mascot for one of the largest fire departments in the country? Each year, the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation opens the Howling Heroes competition to the public. For a nominal submission fee, you can throw your hound’s hat into the ring. But what is it like to be the mascot for the LAFD?

Meet Big Rig, the 2022-2023 Mascot for the LAFD

It only takes one look at Big Rig to know that this pooch is a proper star. He greets every stranger with the warmth of an old friend, charges into new situations with an infectious grin, and shares his love for the world with enthusiasm. You just can’t help but fall in love, which is how his story began.

Francoise Koster found this ball of joy at Roadogs Rescue, and Big Rig won her over instantly. He quickly made himself at home among her other dogs, never losing his puppy energy or his goofy personality. When Francoise found out about the Howling Heroes competition, it just made sense that Big Rig begin his march toward stardom.

After Winning Howling Heroes 2022, Big Rig’s Life Changed Furever

Red carpets, 5-star restaurants, and late-night talk shows…are not really a part of Big Rig’s daily schedule. Being the mascot for one of the largest fire departments in the nation does come with a few perks. He was featured on a KTLA news segment and enjoyed invites to exclusive LAFD events. Now this handsome hound is a not-so-minor celebrity, with over 27 thousand fans on Instagram (and growing).

Francoise says her favorite moment of the year was riding on an engine with Big Rig during a 4th of July Parade. The crowds couldn’t get enough of this loveable lug’s smile, and it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for both of them. Just one of many incredible adventures they’ve enjoyed since winning the Howling Heroes competition.

Show Us Your Pets!

If your four-legged friend has the makings of a genuine animal ambassador, this is your chance to launch them into stardom. Submit your photo for Howling Heroes and tell us why your furry family member is a real hero. Then encourage your friends, families, and even strangers to vote. The top ten finalists then go before our panel of judges (including Fire Chief Kristin Crowley) to select the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.

The funds from this campaign go on to support the LAFD by acquiring essential equipment and initiatives, such as the LAFD’s Canine Therapy Program.
