The January fires marked one of the most challenging periods our city has faced in recent memory. In the first days, as fires erupted across Los Angeles and urgent needs from the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) surfaced, the Foundation shifted immediately into emergency response mode.

Within hours, the LAFD Foundation – the official non-profit arm of the LAFD that has long operated as a behind-the-scenes change agent – became a national point of connection for individuals looking to support the Department. Our mission to equip the LAFD with the tools and equipment they need to save lives and protect communities became more pertinent, more visible, and more critical than ever before.

The response from the community, both near and far, was profound. Donors stepped forward with urgency and generosity, allowing the Foundation to not only meet immediate needs but plan responsibly for whatever comes next.

To date, the Foundation has allocated $42 million of the funds raised in the wake of the wildfires toward critical priorities. Of that, $15 million has ensured that new tools, necessary equipment, and vital apparatus are already in the field and in the hands of the firefighters who serve our city daily.

Every decision during and after the fires has been guided by our commitment to transparency, responsible stewardship, and ensuring a stronger, better-equipped LAFD. The following report offers a high-level overview of a much broader, ongoing effort to strengthen the LAFD in the aftermath of the fires and for any emergency in the years ahead.

The LAFD is only as good as its people. The Firefighter of the Month stories provide an opportunity for the actions of one member of the LAFD each month to be recognized for their achievements that the general public wouldn't normally hear.
