Real World Spotlight
The LAFD requires its members to participate in an approved exercise program. In each fire house there is a place dedicated to the health and welfare of its members. Maintaining strength and stamina is good for the members and good for the people of Los Angeles. Here’s an example.
Rescue 88 was dispatched to a suicide attempt at an office building. A woman on the sixth floor balcony was in grave emotional distress, preparing to jump. Los Angeles Police Department Officers and LAFD Firefighter/Paramedics saved the woman at extreme personal risk to themselves.
The woman weighed about 280 pounds. As she rolled to the edge, a Police Officer grabbed her leg, another officer dove on top of him and the woman to keep them from rolling off the balcony. All were dangling over the edge when a Firefighter reached over and grabbed the officer on top by his belt. With herculean strength, the Firefighter/Paramedic pulled the officers and the still-struggling woman back on to the balcony.
Three lives were saved because of the bravery and physical strength of one quick-thinking Firefighter/Paramedic.
